On June 1, 2010, Robert Friedlander, MD, MA, became the fourth Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgeons at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Prior to joining the department, Dr. Friedlander was Professor of neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School and vice-chairman of neurosurgery and associate director of cerebrovascular surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Presently, Dr. Friedlander is the Walter E. Dandy Distinguished Professor of Neurosurgery, Neurology and Neurobiology, and Co-Director of the UPMC Neurological Institute.

Dr Friedlander’s numerous awards include the most prestigious awards for trainees in neurosurgery from both the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons. In addition, he has received the Bayer Cerebrovascular Award and the International Charcot Prize for Motor Neuron Diseases.

What Do I Know? Dr. Robert M. Friedlander
My mother’s father was born in 1905 in Pinsk, in the old Soviet Union. He was Jewish and had witnessed pogroms against his people, during which half of his family lost their lives. In fact, his father and some of his brothers were killed right in front of him. So, when he was 15, my grandfather escaped, with the equivalent of just $30 in his pocket, and went to Paris. There, he hopped a boat to Cuba.
